Avalanche Death in Seoraksan

The sad following story comes from the Korea Times (online) January 31st 2009. Although extremely rare in the visited regions of Koreas mountains, avalanches are possible...especially on natural 'frozen' waterfalls. Symapthy and condolences to the friends and family of Mr Kim.

A mountain guide was buried to death in bulk of snow from an icefall at Mt Seorak in Sokcho, Gangwon Province, Saturday morning, police said. He is identified as a 51-year-old Kim from Yangju, Gyeonggi Province.

Police said that Kim was found to be buried in 1.5-meter-thick snow believed to be fallen from the top of 40-meter-high Yeomju Fall at Seorakdong.

Kim is alleged to have been killed, while checking the ice quality of the fall, after arriving at the foot of the fall 10 minutes earlier than the climbing club of 10 Hong Kong police officers. He was assigned to assist the Hong Kong police officers in their climbing, according to the police.

Police are investigating the cause of the incident, an officer said.

Kim and his two other guides were to assist in training Hong Kong police officers for five days till Feb. 2, while staying at Yangpok shelter near the iced waterfall, he said.
