Question about bringing gear to Korea.

Hello everyone,

I'm planning on moving to Korea around August 10th for a job teaching English. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what kind of climbing gear I should bring with me. I'm definately bringing my harness, quickdraws, grigri, shoes etc. (all the small stuff), but I was wondering if it would be worth it to bring my rope and/or crashpad. Does anyone have any idea what it might cost to bring these with me, or send them over later? The crashpad is one of those huge madrock tri-fold pads (which I highly recommend - cheap and big). Thanks for the help!

You can get by without them both. But, then you probably will come across enough potential partners lacking equipment to justify packing your rope.

crash pad is hard to get here (and expensive). better bring it if you want to do some bouldering here.

You'll probably do what I did and get your rope sent out to you if you don't bring it out with you. If you have any room, I'd highly advise bringing it. It's nice having the freedom to do your own thing here and not have to find a roped up partner.

It kinda depends on where you're coming from and what airline? Check prices for additional gear-- then you can compare with info on the shopping/buy and sell threads. Coming from the USA, and visiting at least once a year, I'm able to build up a reserve:-) I've been looking into the feasibility of bringing a crash pad back (it's technically oversize and $180 from the USA on Continental) but many folks have told me they've checked pads with no problem (actually no one's ever told me they were charged for oversized). If you have room and weight, a rope is good, but you CAN get that here, so if you want to bring some more food or something you can't get as easily here (increasingly less and less in that category), you have to weigh it!

Anything you don't bring or might want, leave somewhere handy with a friend or family member so they can post it:-)
