Geoje-Do "Ae Bawi" July 24-25
How good was this little weekend? Too good for words dear friends. The less than stellar weather we'd been having on weekends finally broke clear and sunny over the south coast and Andy, Sarah, KYung Ah and I made the wise choice to check out Ae Bawi. It's grand. OK, the crag is pretty small, with about 12-15 routes I guess, but the views, rock quality and ease of access are tremendous. A few bolts seem to be placed in rather strange (dangerous/ off route) places, but 90% was super solid and did I mention the views?
Ae Bawi overlooks the village of Mangchi/망치 on the East coast of Geoje-Do, which is very picturesque and though the min-baks and pensions were all exhorbidantly pricey (it being vacation season), we all had a super time in the villages there (especially at Gujora Beach) after climbing.
Sarah got in many a first, 1st multipitch, 1st real-rock climb in Korea, 1st rappel and 1st road trip in the Rock-Sea wagon with Uncle Jake and KA. We alls weated buckets, but if you haven't been, and like the climbs in the easier 10's, then do yourself a favour and visit the area. It's as close to Tonsai/ Railay as you'll find in Korea!
