Ice Climbing at Yong-Dong (near Daejeon)
Yes folks it's on. It was on today too. It was great. The local "county" government (Yong Dong Gun/ 용동군) has spent a HUGE amount of time, money and effort in making this the ultimate ice climbing stop on your calender.
Gotta say many many thanks go out to Han Sang Hoon (한상훈) who is an x-games route setter/ judge, 5.13 climber and all round super nice guy. He got the whole thing started, organized and made. Same to the local village chief (이장님) who threw his support behind the project and usually attends weekends to watch and share stories and campfire space, food and happines. Also to all the Daejeon and Yong Dong Climbers who helped with the work.
Last year was good, but it is so much bigger, more serviced and so slickly set up now. The giant stone bridge across the pond, the lovely CLEAN new toilets, registeration office (sign in before you climb - see YongDong link in ice climbing areas), mini snack shop run by the village chiefs wife, leveled car-park and kiddies ice rink and sledding pond...and the soon to be finished artificial rock climbing tower wall (in summer there are some sporet routes set up and bolted here too!!).
So "Where the bloody hell are you?" Come to Yong Dong for the friendliest, sweetest sport ice climbing in Korea. Stuff for bumbly beginners and weak climbers like me, right up to monumental mixed route nightmare test-pieces!
Kyung Ah (she who hates the cold with a passion unrivalled) and I are returning there tomorrow with our Daejeon team at about 8am...but call me quick and maybe we can meet you and greet you and get you there too. Trains and busses all go to Daejeon, from here it's about 40km/ half hour drive. It's really quite good.
