A poem about climbing in Korea.
Faces upturned to the bluebird sky, necks cocked
a crowd gathers boasting the challenge to conquer solid rock.
An energy of close camaraderie empowers passion and inspires hard sends
from the confines of comfort hauling hundred pound packs on whirlwind weekends.
A shared obsession unites the sexes, races and international faces
surrounded by tall trees and laughs from lips of new acquaintances.
This cultural interchange mingles with creative laughter and sincere smiles
as patience is employed through simple language and helpful hand signals.
Seoraksan illustrates jagged granite peaks of tyrannosaurus teeth in a panoramic green space
While Seonunsan’s limestone lock down shadows an intricate carving of Buddha’s face
Insubong’s granite laughs above the mighty metropolis of Seoul’s pulsing energy
And Ganhyeon’s sport fever lies tucked in between cross country divinity
Stainless steel rattles on harnesses pulled tight around flexible hips
suspended fifteen feet above by callused hands and toe tips.
Stowed energy of bowlful’s of bibimbap exploit our thirst
while sweat and stink propel us up, thinking safety first.
Can’t hold on, fingers raw and pink
Pumped out forearms, another project redpoint
Heel hook madness, knee drop determination.
Climbing in Korea, body and soul exhilaration,
cada camino es otro destino. todo depende de cual quieres tomar.
