visiting Seoul June 25,26

Our family of 5 will be visiting Korea in June. After a week of tourist stuff, we hope to squeeze in a couple days of climbing. We are a family of five, and our youngest daughter is adopted from Korea (our kids are 16, 13 and 11). We all climb, leading up to easy 10's.

This is our first trip to Korea, but we'll probably be coming back regularly. We have kept June 25 and 26 open, and we'd like to find our way around or find someone to show us some local crags around Seoul for sport climbing or easy alpine routes. We'd really rather not spend the time pulling plastic, and get our hands on some of that awesome-looking granite shown in this site's awesome pictures.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Cheers,
david

Hey there Dave and Family,
If you are in Seoul round late June be prepared it will be rainy season. It is actually quite monsoonal and rains most days in the afternoon. That said you might be OK, as Im nit sure when the worst part starts and ends. In Seoul the place to climb is probably Insubong...a horrendously crowded place on weekends but 25-26th should be OK as it is a Monday-Tuesday. There are a lot of routes there, mostly all slab, crack nat-pro trad climbing. Check out the link under Rock Climbing Areas, Insubong. It's easy to get to, though the walk in from wehere the bus stops will take about 40-60 minutes before you reach the start of the climbs, Hundreds of climb shops and so on at the park (Bukhansan National Park) enterance. These can often supply you with a route map, and advice. Sport climbing areas in Seoul are unknown to me ....but do a quick search again under rock climbing areas Seoul. Maybe someone else will post a reply here about that.
If you wanted a good place, not in Seoul but accessible by a train ride try Ganhyeon/ Kanhyun. It is sport. No cams, nuts or wires needed. 60m rope, a dozen quickdraws and you are good to go.
OK Hope you have a good time when you get here. Keep in contact and we should be able to hook you guys up, and meet.
Best,
Jake

Shanja,

Thanks so much for the beta. I had already found Insubong on this kewl site, and a some sport climbing at Ganhyeon/Kanhyun sounds great too; especially if those Insubong slabs are slick with rain. A little rain won't bother us, we're from the rainy Pacific NW, pulling through wet moss is an art form; but monsoons...hmmm...that may be a different story. We'd come sooner, but we're waiting until the day after school is out, so I hope we beat the monsoon season onset.

Now that the kids have seen the pictures from Korea on the Rocks, they want to cut short the touristy stuff and spend more than 2 days climbing...

Cheers,
david
