Hi there,

I'm looking in to going to Thailand to do some climbing around Oct and am looking for some in site. From what I gather so far is its the off season (good) but does that mean Ill be dealing with rain and other foul weather? As it stands now I want to head to Ton Sai area for the most part but am also considering going up north as well. Are you allowed to camp there or do you need to get a bungalow? Whats all that cost? Are there places that are cheaper than what is shown online? Im pretty sure I have the insurance part covered. It seems there is a lot of info out there but not much of it is useful. They all say about the same thing. What other general travel info can you offer about Thailand. Also visas? It doesn't look like Ill need one, correct? Anything I missed? Anyone else down?

Thanks in advance!!

you dont need a visa unless you plan to stay for more then 30 days. you get a bungalow for under 5$ a day. 2 years ago I stayed at a place called tiew khao for 2$ a day. the place is pretty rustic but clean, community bathrooms. Bring a rope and draws and you should be able to find partners once your there.

I am looking at going around the same time frame. Four days with the wife doing touristy stuff then climbing for a week and a half or so after that without the wife. From what I have found so far the weather should be getting to be ok by then and what do you expect from a bunch of climbers...:) I may also do some time in Cambodia and Laos as well.

Thanks for the input so far. I was actually pondering the same sort of thing. Maybe hit up Malaysia or cambodia or laos (or any combo there of...) Im still kind of up in the air as far as specific dates at the moment because of a TDY Im trying to go on. Anyway thanks again.

We just got back from Thailand... low season is wonderful! No lines for routes and cheap bungalows. I don't know about Oct., but currently Tonsai only has electricity from 6pm-6am most places, so you must be okay with the heat. There are places to climb in the rain on Tonsai. And if it rains, just go deep water soloing! We also stayed on Phi Phi Don for a few days. Our hut was on a really nice beach and a three minute walk from our door to the base of a crag. Not a huge amount of routes, but a few nice ones. A great place for a chance to lay on the beach and just relax and also climb with nobody else around.
