Hello all,
I recently received my harness and my shoes in the mail however I don't have a rope or any other gear.... or even know anyone in korea that climbs, thus joining this site. I am willing to buy some gear if needed (there is no stores in my city though) I am not a professional climber but I always try my best and have a decent knowledge of belaying, setting cams and of course my knots. I am from norther ontario which is where I have done most of my climbing, especially a lot of ice climbing. So if anyone would be willing to let me tag along I really really really want to get back into the sport while I am here!

Hope to hear from someone!!

Sincerely

Jay Barban

Hey man I got all the gear needed to do some sport climbing. I'm in the process of getting settled in Gangwon-Do. I'm not sure exactly where my job will be but I'm thinking it will be in the southern region, so maybe not too far from where you are. Once I get all my stuff together (probably won't be for another week), I'll definately holler at you with a message. I'm psyched to get on some Korean rock!

Hey man!

that sounds so great!! I have been wanting to get out climbing so bad. I did some bouldering in Jeju then last week in Samchuck but that didn't really suppress the urge to get something harder under my belt. I have a motorcycle now so I can get to most places so just let me know when you want to go climbing and we can make arrangements! I am not really sure of any places to go other then what I have seen on this site. Have you done much climbing here?

Jay

Jay man, as soon as you know where you are living and settles give us a bell! The climbing here is great. Sport wise, Gangwon do has a lot (trad too- a lot of trad!). Lots of ice up there too, and down here (Daejeon, central Korea). Ice is rad so we will surely be doing that together. Ganhyeon/ Kanhyun/ 간현 in Wonju area has awesome sport climbing and should be "near" you. Korea has a lot to offer!

Jay, Yeongju in Gangwon-do nearish to Andong? Then you should be able to jump a train or bus to Wonju city easily and then get a city bus out to Ganhyeon Resort/ 간현 유원지 where there is a heap of sport climbing. Very nice area, lots of climbs of all grades and easy access (and a river to cool off in right next to crag!). We'll likely be headed up there again soon, and Terra (KOTRer) in fact lives in Wonju too!

Oh make sure you keep up to date on the Meet and Greet too. Thats where all the folks gather and you'll find at least 30 rad people to trust your lives with, including me!

Can you tell me more about this meet and greet?

There isn't dates or venues posted yet, but twice a year we have an official meet and greet to introduce new climbers and share partners with veterans that have just arrived. It is the best time to meet a wack of people who also indulge in the passion that is climbing rocks! It usually takes place in September or October. My guess is you'll hear something very soon.
Who is "in charge" this year? Jake?

Anyone interested in climbing in Wonju this weekend? Of course I have no idea where and am lacking gear but I would love to join someone if they are looking for a partner!

If you be in the Wonju area, then Ganhyeon (Kanhyun/ 간현) is your playground. Out to the NW of Wonju (or West anyways...towards Munmak), it is a super place to get your sport climbing fix. Lots of great routes in the 5.9-10b range, lot's in the 12s and up and a few in that 11's range too.
Weather, weather weather....if it's too shite to trad at Seoraksan, maybe we'll end up there (Ganhyeon) too. 12 draws, a 60m rope and shoes/ harness/ belay tool is all you need!

hey!! Wow this is awesome that that you might be going there this weekend! However I have not had a chance to go down to Seoul and buy some equipment. So for now all I have is a harness, shoes chalk bag...(no chalk) lol. and a few beaners..... no rope or grigi or belay device of any sort. Should I wait till I buy this stuff before I come climbing with you!?!
