Yeong-Dong open?

Does anyone know if Yeong-Dong will be open this weekend? It's warm, but I don't know how protected the ice is. Any beta would be helpful.

Yeah mate, it should be open. Was open last weekend and on Tuesday when I got there. Chopped out, but still OK. We had 2 snowfalls this week, so I see no problem beyond massive crowds! I'll likely be hitting it on Sunday....maybe Saturday too if my drinks with the Korean climbers tonight is moderate....:rolleyes8

I should be there Saturday, then. Not sure if I can make it Sunday. Will be wearing grey arc'teryx softshell with a BD hard lid and swinging vipers. Have a friend that rock climbs and would like to try the ice, is there rental gear available?

Ahhh sorry no, no rentals there (except helmets!). But you should only need one set tools between you and if you are the same foot size the belayer and climber can simply swap footwear. haneulsae (Lloyd) might be up for some Saturday action....pm him, he also has all the gear (but no rope).

Yeong Dong will be closed for the rest of the year AFTER this Sunday. Sunday the 21st February 2010 is the final day of ice climbing at Yeong Dong till next season.

I was there today and they were saying next weeend was the last. Maybe it was a communication problem. That being said, one wall is completely cracked and closed, another is starting to crack, and there were some good sized chunks being thrown down. It was all so chopped and stepped that the only technical spots were the overhangs. The upper right wall still looked like a good run.

Hope you make it out tomorrow. I really liked the place, but it is a hell of a bus ride from here. Next time I'll rent a car :D
