hi all,

so ive never climbed before but im really intent on tackling seoraksan. the last week and a half ive been debating on whether or not to just pick up some gear and head to the mountain for chuseok. Im pretty athletic, but im still a little hesitant cause i dont kno wwhat to expect. If anyone could give me a quick briefing on what to expect or detail how challenging it is that would be awesome.

thanks

Hi Marley, Well if you've never climbed (as opposed to hiked) before, I'd strongly recommend that you go with an experienced climber (there will be a few KOTRers in Seoraksan over the Chuseok break....look at the threads in the forums). Being athletic is a great start, but rock-climbing also needs a knowledge of the gear, how to use it and what to do if things go awry. Also roped climbing is necessarily a minimum two folks affair. Gear is a bit expensive to buy, especially if you are not familiar with what you'll need/ brands/ styles etc. Again it's best to do this with an experienced climber if possible.
If by climbing you meant "hiking" (as many Koreans also do), then by all means head off to beautiful Seoraksan solo. It's a wonderful park with many great hikes. Even the main trails are tough days work, some require 2 or 3 days, sleeping at the shelter huts (some are pretty luxurious, some basic). These are not free, and some need bookings in advance via the Korea National Parks website (alas not possible to book in English).
Gear wise: Good well fitting hiking boots and socks are the single most important item. The trails are rough, long and you might be miles from any "civilized" road at times. Can be slippery, rocky and steep!
Back-pack (30-50L is plenty big enough) to carry water (lots) camera and snacks. Make sure you take out all garbage though.
Trekking poles or sticks are great for saving your knees and lower back. One is good, two better but unnecessary most times.
Avoid cotton pants/ shirts as they stay wet, chafe and freeze. Try to wear coolmax etc.

Two men and a bog roll.
