Okay man, if you're gonna hang in Korea you gotta ditch the selective palette as far as beer is concerned. We drink shite beer here and we like it(and you will too.) Cool kids?, F that, they're back at the brewpubs stateside. Leave it all and learn to party in a noreabang after some rounds of Soju and you'll be lovin' life. The rock is plentiful and so is everything else you can imagine. Welcome to the funky freaky dream that is Korea!

Not a bad idea to head out early. . . but at any rate, spend your first weekend with KOTR!! you can bring about 6 beers (in your checked luggage) and every trip back I brought some redpoint ales. . . very good way to make friends with Korean and expat climbers. Personally, I hate beer. Go for the dong-dong ju. Decent wine (at rather inflated prices) is to be had.

Gabriel! You pleb, YOU might drink shite and (c)*** but we refined and snobbier than thou types in the central regions, we drink HOMEBREW with extra Mt Hood/ Hallertau/ Fuggles/ Cascade and Goldings hops. You can do this too Craig my boy, yes you can.
Everything is possible, and no-rae-bang (karyoke in private rooms) is King! Welsome and be a part of stuff where coolness don't matter and the rock is good.

jake, you're onto something with this homebrew thing. i'll be smuggling over some cascade and centennial hops so guys like you and me will hence get stuck with some dank, heady hop heaven, while gabe enjoys the lovely "shite."

anyway, sonia, thanks for the beta on the duty free idea. i get one and each of my new favorite people get to share the rest til they're gone. any requests?

No no, don't get me wrong! I love good beer and have too few occasions to drink it while "incountry." Although, there is something to be said for adapting to that Korean watery piss and lovin' the good times that follow! :becky:

Those occasions have just multiplied though. Went to that Canadian brewery in Gangnam. Good stuff, still a little watery, but mighty tasty!

As far as manning up to brew my own, nope, I'll let you stout chickens lead that pitch and just enjoy the spoils.
If you're kind enough to feed the kodji(sp?) And hell, I'll trade you a little summit pizza for it ;)

Craig, if you'll bring me a fat tire or anything by New Belgium I'll be your belay biatch for years!

Gabe, Gabe, Gabe and Craig, Craig, Craig...twas all in jest dera wags. Korean beer is drinkable, but like Sonia most assiduously points out....Dong-dong Ju, Makkoli, Sansachun, Baekse Ju and so on are all great local special 'wines/ beer equivalents'.
Seriously though, if you can make a coffee (not that pre-mixed stuff) then you can brew a can-kit homebrew beer that is 1000 times better than anything put out by the big manufacturers (Korean or American or Aussie). The supplies are here (tho pricey comp'd to home).
I'll be away from July 24th-Aug 21st most likely doing the KOTR summer evacuation trip to the climbing of Thailand and Vietnam...sadly it looks like the Nepal trip has run aground of a few too many hurdles for this summer so it's going to be on at a later date (When both Gabe and Shawn will e able to partake!:becky: )

I'd be happy to share any beer with you, whether it's something special from the states or our lovely, local shite. :)

What's up P-town!? These guys are right about the beer situation... fill an entire suitcase with Black Butte Porter.
Where will you be living in Korea?

in portland:
nobody is really into the whole "worlds most unified moonwalk" thing, but the Pedalpolooza naked bike-ride was good. i burned my seat afterward.
i don't think anybody in Stump has given much thought about black butte porter. but i'll try to fit a pony barrel of Lompoc Centennial into by day pack. (i think i'm already at my weight max though, for shipping on my flight.) it might not work out.

i was to arrive this week at my new "Bachelor Studio" in Gwangmyeong, but my gem-of-a volkswagon bus got t-boned saturday and now i need to postpone my plans for chiropractic. And things like shuffling-infinity-crapload-insurance-paperwork-type-symptoms.

so, now want to be there before mud fest. Is anybody from Seoul wanting to go to mud fest with me in their car? is it two weeks? saturday 11th?

i feel like i'm never going to get there. and i'm already not here. ike!

oh! and, do you have delicious Tamari Almonds in Korea?:hungry: yum
