Hey,

As noted, I'm entirely new to climbing (so new, in fact, that I've never climbed). I've read through the forum (newer and older posts) and got the sense that: a) Korea's a great place to start climbing; b) the people here are friendly, helpful, and interesting; c) I need shoes.

Other than that, I'm fairly ignorant of how I should go about starting. I've noticed that there's a bouldering gym in Suwon, but I haven't come across a climbing wall.

So, what I'm wondering is -- how should I actually go about practicing so that I'm ready to climb outside this season? Is that even realistic? Is there anyone in/near Suwon who can point me in the right direction? Or, for that matter, outside of Suwon?

I'm willing and happy to travel around to meet people, try gyms, find gear, etc. The good thing about Suwon is that it's central, and connected to other cities quite easily. I work 3-11pm, so I'm available in the mornings/early afternoon, and on weekends.

Looking forward to meeting many of you and to finally learning how to climb!

Cheap Shoes:

Join a gym and see if they can hook you up with some used shoes. I bought an extra pair for 20,000. I personally don't find Korean gyms as fun as back home but they are good for training.

If you check out Jongno 5 Ga, maybe exit 6. Walk straight until you hit an alley and turn left. There are tons of stores. I bought new shoes recently and some of the stores were clearing out cheap, shoes in clearance baskets outside the store. However, size might be an issue. If anyone can give better directions feel free.

People are always going climbing check out the upcoming trips section.

Hey! Welcome to KOTR then! I think we are all pretty decent and friendly people,, thanks for the comment...makes us all feel warm and fuzzy inside.
As for training etc, join a bouldering indoor gym...the ones in Suwon probably have a KOTRer or two as regulars there anyway. They are great places to get the basics of movement and technique (which is 10000 times more important than strength). Also you'll become a part of the community and pick-up Korean (language, friends and culture) really well. Don't be intimidated if they correct you a lot or can't speak English well...the Suwon team are nice people and great climbers too.
Shoes are the 1st buy, and a "all-round" pair fitted snugly should set you back no more than 60,000won new.

Thanks for the posts and the information, everyone; they've been really helpful. I'm going to get my shoes and chalk bag this weekend, and I plan to be out soon!

hey man, hope you've already found a lot of places to climb in your area through friends on this page. i happened to be in byeomjeom a few days ago(couple stops from suwon). there's a pretty big park there and as i walked through, i saw a pretty nice climbing wall. not sure if it's on kotr. im sure you can find something closer to you, but in the future you might want to try out something new for a change. you might want to check it out with your friends once you've collected enough gear..it's in the middle of "central park" in byeomjeon.

anyway, just thought i'd let you know..

enjoy climbing and stay safe!
