Hope everyone's enjoying this wet weather we're getting right now. ;)

Is anyone up for a trip from around August 7/8th to 19th? I would like to go anywhere (especially Jeju-do, Sonunsan, Busan, somewhere down south maybe, because I never go there) for climbing and camping. I sport climb in the mid 5.10's and am eager to learn trad. Also, I live in Yongin (just south of Seoul) and have a car.

Alternatively, I would also love to go kayaking during that time (or do both). Probably near Inje in Gangwondo.

Let me know if you're interested!

Cheers!

Hey there dude!

I was wondering what happened to you last weekend! It's too bad, you missed some fun, albeit slippery climbing. I just figured you would come on Sunday or had decided not to come. Right now, our school is having a summer camp, so I won't be able to make it out until August 7th or so. But then I'll be hoping to go to Sonunsan or somewhere anyway.

Let me know if you're interested when August rolls around.

Ciao!

Cool, that's good to know (Rick)...where exactly is Kunsan? About 1.5 hours south of Seoul? How far is that from Sonunsan? Would you be interested in heading to Sonunsan/south near Busan/Jeju-do/Soraksan? Can you only make it on the 7th and 8th? I have a rope and 12 draws, plus belay devices, so we should be okay...

Any other takers? Don't worry, you've got some time if you're not sure! ;)

hey CG,
kunsan is about 1.5 hours sw of daejeon or 45 min w of jeonju. it looks like it's a little over an hour to sonunsan if i'm guessing the location right (w. coast provincial park?).
i'm open from sometime friday afternoon to sunday night (i could probably roll in a little late monday if necessary). i'd be up for sonunsan definitely; jeju-do and busan depends on our timing; and isn't seoraksan way up ne?
i'll be gone this weekend and check back on monday.
cheers!

Okay...

Our school has a summer camp going on right now. It ends next Saturday (Aug. 6th), so I won't be able to get out climbing till Sunday. I was thinking I might join some people on Insubong, or just climb at the outdoor wall in Eungbong-dong.

As for the long weekend (Aug. 13-15th), Seonunsan sounds good to me. I was thinking of going kayaking from the 8/9th till the 11th, or not, and then heading down south to climb...maybe Seonunsan or a couple of different places down south? I could definitely be in Seonunsan on the 15th if you want to climb there then. Or...does anyone know other good climbing areas down there? I would love to travel around the southern area from around the 11th till the 20th.

Also, going to Japan was brought up by someone recently. Maybe from the 15th to the 20th? Does anyone know the good climbing areas in Japan?

Cheers!

hey, this works out great! it turns out i need to go to osan this weekend instead of next, which leaves the 13/14th free. i don't have the 15th off, but i'll drive so that won't affect anyone.
let me know if you head down south that weekend.
cheers!

to ALL, i just moved to Korea two weeks ago and have not climbed since being here, going into withdrawals. i was a pro-guide, though not a super strong climber at a climbing/guiding school in the states. i have around 16 draws, harness, rope, two pair o shoes [size 43ish] some passive pro and belay device. no car and very little knowledge. i'm living in daegu and teaching at Keimyung university. i'm free every weekend from friday night at 2100 til early monday morning and would love to meet and climb somewhere. the summer program i'm at ends on 19 aug and i will have at least 9-10 days from that point free for climbing/kayaking/exploring/whatever. let me know....
tel: 053 580 6855 or email at joshuaroe21@yahoo.com.
peace.

Paul, Rick, Josh, et al...

Hope that you get some form of this trip plan...if you are interested in joining at all, let me know. Also thinking of kayaking on the 9/10th if it's possible to get to Inje.

Anyway...

8.10/11 - 8.12 : Ganhyeon, if I can find anyone to climb with...

Driving to Seonunsan on the night of the 12th...?

8.13 - 8.15/16 : Seonunsan

8.15/16 - 8.20/21 : I'd really like to climb down south near Busan or anywhere south of Daegu. I've never been down there. I was looking at Am Nam Kong Won - it looks interesting...any recommendations out there from anyone? I'd be interested in going to any crag that was fun, safe and challenging (almost any crag should be pretty challenging for me! :)

8.20/21 - 8.25 - taking a ferry to Fukuoka and learning to surf in Japan, hopefully, and maybe climbing if there is any in the area. Does anyone know about climbing in this area of Japan?

So...yeah, well that's about it! Hope to see lots of people out there climbing!

Ciao!

Heidi,
i'm willing to join you for any of the days on the weekend or after the 19th of the month. i don't have a vehicle though and have yet to really explore the public transport system. as i'm located in daegu i'm searching constantly for places near here to climb. it looks like this sight has a lot of places listed in busan and i may have a job there at the very end of this month so going south of here would be more than perfect for me. can you come through daegu and get me or would it be better to meet somewhere south of here in a city near the climbing. cant wait to get vertical.

Dear all,

I went out in the country.. about an hour from Cheongju. I was surrounded by mountains and granite boulders in the forests but the directors from my school were with me and they said they were afraid of me getting hurt. If I was in the states i would have said "so?" and I would have climbed but because of the whole collectivist thing I didn't climb. it was SOOO HARD not too.

on a different note. If I am going to climb with any of you guys.. i am going to need to buy a harness huh? And if so, where and what?

Hey guys!

Thanks for the quick replies...

Paul, I can pick you up close to Seonunsan, there are a couple of small towns there, I will try to find out which one a bus from Seoul goes to. Will you be able to make it out there on the 12th? What time are you finished work? I have been to Seonunsan before, and am reasonably sure that I can find the way again. :) Thanks for the tip about Nagasaki.

(Jamie, if you are out there, have you heard about Nagasaki? Would you be interested in heading there?)

Same to you, Josh. Also, I am thinking of leaving from Busan (or wherever) on the overnight ferry (I think there is one) to Fukuoka on the 21st, if I don't go sooner. Would you be able to get back to Daegu alright? Let me know if you want to go to Seonunsan on the long weekend. If you need to get picked up from the town nearby, I could probably do that. What time do you finish work on Friday?

Alex, sorry that I don't know about Cheongju, but there are probably some outdoor stores, and then there is a fairly good likelihood that you could get a harness there. Is there a climbing gym in Cheongju? Maybe you could borrow a harness until you can buy one. If you make it into Seoul, there are tons of outdoor stores, especially in Dongdaemun.

Hope to see everyone out on the rocks!

Cheers!

Heidi, I don't get out of class friday night until 20:50. But I'm sure I can bus out on a late ride and get there late night and sleep wherever until morning or whatever we need to do. I'll check the bus and train schedules from here in Daegu to see what it will take. As for Japan, do you have any cost range for the trip? I can probably make it out there but I'll need to figure out my spending first. I'll at least work hard for now on this weekend, then we can talk about two weeks from now maybe this weekend or next week. Let me know what you find about nearby cities.

Hey guys,

Yeah Rick, there's a lot of camping there. Just inside the entrance to the park, there's a youth hostel, with a small campground beside it.

If you don't mind a bit of a walk, you can park your car at the entrance and walk in to the minbak which is closer to the crag, just below the reservoir. It's about a 10-15 min walk on the road, not bad, but I'm lazy! :) Of course, you'll have to do it anyway to get to the crag, may as well just do it once right away.

Or, if you are an extremely charming person, you may be able to convince the security guard to let you drive all the way in if you come late at night. It's only worked for me and my friends once or twice. But, it's worth a try!

As for Japan, Josh, I have no idea. I thought I'd take a ferry over to Fukuoka, visit with my friend and try to learn to surf, go climbing if there is some in the area, and leave before I run out of money. I want to travel cheaply as well, so it will only be about a four day trip.

I heard that there are lots of good crags down south near Busan, and am going to try and contact some members of the climbing gyms from there to see if anyone wants to join/guide us. (Any Busan climbers out there?) Josh, do you climb at the Power Climbing Center in Daegu? Do you know Choi Sang Won? He is a super nice climber and might be able to climb with us/give us info.

Anyway, see you all soon!

:)

hey all,
this weekend has come upon me too quickly and with split teaching hours through the day as well as still having much to learn about how things work in korea, i'm going to explore daegu this weekend. i was told by some locals that there is climbing [natural] 30 mins by bus from where i am. so i'm going to find this place as i don't think its listed on here. so if that works out i'll post all the info i can gather about it. i still want to plan a trip with some definite detail for the weekend starting 19 august as i will be free through 28 or 29 august. hope all goes well this weekend for everyone.

did you all make it? hope so. i went out sat. am and wandered the park looking for you...probably should have checked out the specifics before leaving. oh well, had a great time hiking around checking out the hills/rocks/temples/etc. and was exhausted by the end of the day. i covered most of the trails except in the valley the climbing is in. that is a beautiful park so if anyone is heading there to climb i'd love to join!

Well, 5 of us crammed into Heidi's car (Thanks again!!) for the ride down to Suneonson Friday night for an excellent weekend of climbing. If you want to get away from the big crowds and the heat, this is the place to go. Lots of great routes, plenty of difficulty. Plus lovely post-climb dips in the reservoir...you guys missed a good time!

no no no, that's not what i wanted to hear!
seriously, glad you all had a good time. i definitely agree about the crowds! once off the road, i saw about a dozen people total!
