28 year old Canadian male looking for climbing guide/partners for July 20-28. I would prefer to climb on weekdays from noon-9:00pm, but my schedule is flexible. I'll be visiting a friend who is teaching english and I will be staying in Suwon. I lead 5.10a/b sport. I'm looking for anyone who'd be interested in climbing sometime. It would be great to get out on the rock at least once or twice while I'm in Korea. I have my own (sport) gear.

Hi Roger,

Can you climb in the mornings or stay overnight at a crag? I'd like to climb at Ganhyun or someplace after I get back to Korea on the 21st (I'm in Thailand now), but I'd like to do more of a camping trip, so that I don't have to drive back and forth. If you are jonesing for any climbing at all, the new Suwon climbing center may be opened by now (it should be located by the World Cup Stadium in Suwon). There is a pretty good crag near Anyang too, about 5-10 min from Indeogwan St.

Anyone else interested in a climbing or kayaking trip from the 21st to the 24/5th or so?? (Sarah?) Ganhyun, Sonunsan, Seoraksan, Inje (for kayaking)? Has it stopped raining in Korea yet?

Cheers?
Heidi

Hello Heidi,

I can do the odd morning or overnight trip, but I'm visiting my gf who is teaching weekdays from 12:30-8:30, so I was trying to plan around that. How was Thailand? Hot? Wet? I'm heading there Jul. 30, where did you climb?

Hi Roger!

Thailand was awesome, thanks. Hot, but not as wet as it sounds like Korea has been lately. I spent a few days bouldering on Koh Tao, then 10 days at Railay, places like 123 Wall, Aonang Tower (epic), Tonsei beach (this is THE best place to stay, I recommend the Banyan Tree resort for the people, the food and the cost, but all of the places here are good), etc. If you are traveling alone, there should also be tons of people to climb with. Also headed to Koh Phi Phi for a couple of days to help with the tsunami cleanup and managed to get in a half day of climbing. Mostly easy grades with huge, blocky holds, don't know how I am going to get back on crimpy/slopey holds now! It was alright, but I really prefered Railay.

I'm flying back to Korea today and am hoping to do a climbing trip from about the 21st to the 24th. However, I will try to find out if the new gym in Suwon is open yet, if so, maybe we could meet there after the 25th and climb in the evening (or you could climb there whenever, I'm only available in the evening. :)

Cheers!

Hello all,

I've arrived in Korea and am starting to get used to the heat. Although I can't say I'm a fan of 30 degrees celcius and 80% relative humidity. I'd like to get out climbing at least once or twice this next week (July 25-28). I leave on the 29th for thailand though.

YO! Ya I am currently living in Cheongju and i may be moving to Suwon in about a month. I have been a pure boulderer in the past but am up to learning sport. I miss climbing so much.... I miss Squamish BC and other areas. A crave climbing so anyone who is down to show me around and needs partner.. even a partner in the climbing gyms of seoul.. I'M SOOO DOWN

i dunno about sport.. but I can boulder up to V-7.. at least in my prime.. right now i could probably flash a v-2+. I want to get back to the v-7 range!

peace be with you,
ag

Hi there ag!

Either kayaking or climbing would be cool. I have only kayaked a few times, but definitely wanting to go more! As for climbing, mostly I have been a gym rat in the past, but am hoping to get back into nature more, whether sport climbing or bouldering. I don't know the V grades, but those sounds pretty high. I climb mid-5.10's, or around V0 probably. :\

Let me know if you move to Suwon. I think there is a gym that just opened there a couple of days ago. I will probably start going there as it's much closer to Yongin, where I live, than my current gym in Anyang. It's somewhere close to the Suwon World Cup stadium.

Ciao!

Yo Heide,

Please, call me Alex. :)

Hey well I will be coming to Suwon probably Friday night and stay until Sunday. I want to check it out if i want to move there first. A climbing gym will be a BIG PUSH!

The only thing is the school i'm working at now loves me and really wants me to stay... which means more money... we will see I guess. Hard decision.. like deciding what to eat at a thai restaurant. right? :)

we should meet up.

By the way, where areyou from?

Hi Alex!

Where would you be teaching in Suwon? The climbing gym is new, and I haven't seen it yet, but the old one was satisfactory/decent. I'm assuming the new one is somewhat better...

If you want, I can show you where it is this weekend. However, I work on Saturday (summer camp) until the early evening. The gym should be open after I'm done though, if you want to check it out then. It is probably closed on Sunday though.

The old gym was solely bouldering, as I imagine this one will be also. However, there were some good routes, as the owner (Cho Kyung Ah) is one of the most called-upon route-setters in Korea. (He would often make a nice 100-move or so route to keep us busy in the winter. I never finished it - maybe this year. :) It cost about 60,000 won a month.

If you would be living close to Hwaseong fortress or Manseok Park, you could consider going to the gym in Anyang that I've been going to. It's a great place to train, climbs of all levels, great Koreans and foreigners, very fun and friendly. Same price.

If you want to check out the Suwon gym this weekend, give me a shout. 016-9223-1369. Oh yeah, I'm from southern Alberta.

Ciao,
Heidi
