2008 is the year of the cimb-fest in my books (even though, or maybe bevause I missed the M&G:Cry: ), and so here's the next major event on the KOTR "higher than you think" calender of fun.
We've tried this before, but this year halloween is actually a Friday and so fits well. Grab your costume ("no costume, no climbing" as stated in the model of the provisional draught constitution on KOTR's as yet unpublished lexa non scripta edition). Tent city will function as the door-to-door "trick or treat street" and we will also be doing the "every individual bring a single 5,000won or less mystery gift swap thing". Know what I'm saying?
So don't despair if you missed the M&G:nono: , rather gear up, dress up and get yourself over to "the G" for a weekend of spooky kooky fun and frights.
Saturday night feasting a distinct possibility (I'm thinking communal punch and cake at the least). Jack-o-lanterns galore (if pumpkins are hard to come by, use watermelons!) welcome.
For directions on getting to Ganhyeon (Kanhyun/간현 etc) see the link:
http://www.koreaontherocks.com/climbing/areas.php?area_id=22&sort=name
Trains from Seoul's Cheongyangni Station (청양리역) run straight to Ganhyeon village, a mere 20min walk from the crag.
By all means bring a Korean or non-climbing friend and spread the word.

I was planning on throwing a Halloween party at my apt anyways, so now I can just help throw it 20 minutes away! :) Less clean up that way!

Will people be there friday night for costumes?
shanja
10-20-2008, 10:10 PM
We'll be in Friday. Costumes could be worn both nights, why not? Remember everyone should also bring 1 present (5,000won or under) to give as a mystery exchange thing...and maybe we can co-ordinate a few Min-bak-ing groups (probably us this time), and dinner plans. Maybe instead of the usual post climbing cook-feast we could book a local restaurant out and be uptown snobbies? Just an idea. Campfire and drinks thereat definitely needed.
Chickenlegs
10-21-2008, 03:10 PM
I don't know a/b everyone else, but Kris and I are having to watch our money closely b/c of how the exchange rates are so I think we'll be making dinner. Unless you or KA can call the people right at the crag and see how much twaegi galbi or galbi sal would be... those are ususally pretty cheap. :) I often see them providing food for large groups but I have no idea how much it costs.
Even if we don't join you for dinner there should be some campfire and s'mores. Does any one else have marshmallows?

I'll be in Friday. . . costume depends if I can get what I need. . . cooking is half the fun. . . at least it was this weekend. . . anyone wanting in on a veggie feast RSVP and you can contribute cash or we'll assign you some foodstuffs!
Jinju crew should rent a car. . . routes start at 5.6-5.7. . . an excellent place to start leading!

OK so who wants to "min-bak" it? If you wanna split the cost and sharing is no problem let me know here or via a pm. KA wants to book the places in advance and knowing her bargaining prowess, might even get a discout. Who and how many nights (Fri and Sat or just Sat). See you guys there, and OK let's roll with the get together mixed cook-up and camp-fire. This time we will collect wood before night-fall, from the thrashed pallet pile near the roadworks maybe?

Hey any one know of a decent website in English that could give me the train schedules to Ganhyeon from Seoul. I seem to not know where to really look.
shanja
10-27-2008, 08:51 PM
Well you could try the Korea Trvel link on the left scroll bar:p , but if that doesn't work, try looking under the Search Climbs "Ganhyeon" or "Kanhyun" name for travel details. You need to get to Cheongryangri UPPER (not lower) station. From there it's a real train (not subway) on the Jung-ang line. 3 a day I believe.

Also, if you are coming from the Seoul area and you want more time options, you should check on the busses to Wonju and ask the driver to let you out at Munmak and you can get a taxi from there to Ganhyeon.

Don't forget to bring a funny/ joke 5000won (max value - no moreplease!) exchange gift each also. 잊이말고, 5000원 (이후) 선물도 가지가요! 다른사람위해 교환해요. 그냥넝담선물 괜찮아요, 비산하고심각한 선물 안돼요, OK?
Also if you want to bring a pumkin/ watermelon etc for Jack 'o' Lantern making (bring a candle too).
한나도, 만약 할로윈 램프만들고싶있으면, 호박/수박 등등 가지가세요! (작은양초필요해요).

Looks like I am in for some route climbing this weekend with you all (so you can make fun at how much endurance I DON'T have, teeheehee!!). I am going to try to leave as soon as possible Friday night and get up really really early Saturday morning and leave Saturday night (anyone know the train schedule from the area back to Seoul?). So far I think Matt is coming along as well... Sonia, where are you leaving from?! Also, is there room in the minbak for me on Friday night?

I am so happy that people are coming to Ganhyeon this weekend! Kris and I have only been climbing there on Tuesdays lately with an occasional Friday or Sunday, so we haven't really seen anyone lately... (except for our Seonunsan run-ins which I really enjoy!). Anyways, does anyone else have marshmallows to bring? We don't have that many and I don't want to eat s'mores unless there are enough to share. :)
People with large cars... i.e. Jake.... a few minutes drive outside Ganhyeon, there is a huge pile of broken pallets that I'm sure we could use for firewood. We looked the other day and they are definitely out of commision, so I think we won't catch any flack for taking them.
See you guys soon!

We look like having about 25 people who want min-baks already. I'll see if KA can try and reserve enough rooms and so on. How many per room depends on the rooms they have available. Usually a room can hold 4-8 people. If it's raining Fri we won't be there till at am. Keep a look out for other new KOTRers at the stations and so on, split a taxi/ share a train ride and help each other out.

OK due to the 80% chance of rain Fri at the G and KA having a truly god-awful case of the lurghi (only old school BBC and commonwealth types will get that reference I s'pose) the Rock-sea wagon with Kyung Ah and I will be in on Saturday morning, not Friday -sorry. That means Kat you should ride with us, you too Connie! Reserve via my cell (010-6488-8733) asap! Otherwise I might be giving Jon Brown and his lady a ride (if that suits you guys, coming into Daejeon early Sat morn?). Have you cats got your climbing fingers itchy? Well by geez, by jingoes, by crikey I do! That and a costume.

Ooops! Guys and Girls! KA has just finished checking the min-bak situation. Nearly all the min-baks are fully booked this weekend!! Fri night people will be on their own (sorry) but Saturday night KA has (using her name) managed to get a big min-bak on the 3rd floor opposite the crag. It has 3 seperate bedrooms and a large living room. It'll easily hold us all (about 25 odd), but only has 1 bathroom. So for Sat night I have interest from 28 people plus. You are:
Diana, Kat, Brandon, Jason, Les, 수진, 효헌, 동일, Mae-lin, Aiko, Adrienne, Sonia, Heather, Will, Matt Beery, Heidi, Tony, Jon Brown + girlfriend, Josh + 2 (?) friends, 상인, 재훈, 규진 + 2 friends, Jerry, Anthony, Scott Crowley, 경아, me!
PLEASE IF YOU DO or DON'T WANT TO BE IN THIS MIN-BAK TELL ME ASAP!!!!!!!! KA and I are guarranteeing/ reserving this place, and don't want to be stuck with paying a huge bill. Cheers!
The cost will be 220,000won total. Between 22 people that is 10,000won each. Between 25 it's 8800won! Between 15 it's 15000won!! Get in on it!

Ha! that place is GONE! That's right between posting and phoning before another group booked it. So we duid get another place on the 1st floor at Man-su San-jang (만수산장) it has 2 smaller rooms and a big room and costs 150,000won with 2 toilets!!! Sweet! Thanks KA!! They'll even help us with a little wood for the campfire. This is only SATURDAY NIGHT sleeping.

Is anyone camping? If we do, then we'll be at the far campsite where we had the spring meet and greet this year. It feels strange to camp 20 minutes from my home, but if we don't, then we have to have the 'who has to drive home' debate. :)

As per the usual, the Jinju crew's left it's planning/organizing to the last minute. Here's hoping there'll be space for us to squeeze in to one of the minbak rooms :becky:
See ya tomorrow.
