So, has the ninja pants idea leapt stealthily back into the shadows? That is one idea I would like to see come to fruition. I remember someone mentioning a lead on fishing pants... what are details on that? If there's enough interest, I can work up some designs, and of course designs and suggestions are welcome from all around.
For those not familiar with KOTR ninja lore, we're basically talking about long shorts, or short pants (I think they're called highwaters in some circles). If you've been looking around for that perfect pair of ninja pants, and just couldn't find the perfect pair, speak up, lest we relegate this idea to the land of conceptual awesome.

Haha, okay, I'll bite. Did you ever mention what the fruiting idea was?
As I moved here during the winter, I'll soon be on the look out for some cooler clothes, so please explain (or send me links to) the history of nija pants here on kotr.

If you can see the ninja pants, it's already too late...
Ok, history. Long long time ago, when tigers smoked pipes, their was a thread about what the next KOTR merch should be. I believe it came down to either a new t-shirt, one of those tubular (I mean shape, not slang... well, maybe both) head/neck scarf thingies, or the aforementioned deadly ninja pants.

Since it got brought up again... Kris found place where we can order Thai-fisherman style pants really cheap... like $6-7. But they would have to be mailed to someone's APO.
If we do this, I think the old silhouette logo and/or a vertical "KOTR" on one leg would look nice.
Also, Kris and I have a short two week vacation in June that we are going to spend in Railay trying to get warmed up for August in Vietnam, so we could possibly pick some up there.
I also like the Taekwondo pants some of the Korean climbers wear, but we haven't figured out where to order them.

That's what I'm talking about! I like the idea of the logo on one leg. I was wondering if we could take a photo of a mountain range, turn it silhouette, and wrap it around the bottom of one pant leg. Visualize it, in whatever color sounds best. Anybody got a good one? Now, would this place do the printing, or would we have to bring them here and have them printed? Also, is there a minimum order?
In any case, the next step is simple... whoever wants a pair, speak up. Pre-order makes sense to me. Once the pants are in place, we can talk grappling hooks. One thing at a time, though...

$6 pants? I'm in just for that.
And thank you for the "Long long time ago" line. Now I have American Pie stuck in my head. Damn you and your overly symbolic lyrics, Don McClean!
If you go to a Taekwondo dojong, they will be able to give the info from their supplier. They're a little different, but I could get you plenty of info on bjj gi suppliers. They come in all colors. I've even heard stories of pink ones. The problem is getting the pants and not the top. And they definitely cost me more than $6.
Personally, as flattering as a gi is, I wouldn't want to wear mine outside of my gym.

Here we go: this is just one of the offerings on the website... but we'd have to figure out shipping.

If Jess and I find cheap ones in Ao Nang or Krabi, we could possibly fill up a duffel...

That is great. Probably the best way is get them from Thailand (either by order, or by extremely generous freelance import/export agents) and have them printed here. I'm guessing around the cuff would be difficult, as awesome as it would look. Up the leg would be easier. Does anyone have a lead on a printer here who would let us provide the pants?

count me in for 1 pair. I have a friend here in Seoul who gets shirts made for different events. I can get in contact with the store that he deals with. Just let me know what you want me to ask about.. umm symbols, letters, sizes of each, and anything else that you might want on them

Since all the fisherman pants would be the same size, the main questions are:
how much for a one color design
what are their rates (how much for a group of 10, 20, 35, etc.)
what format do they require the design to be in
what is their minimum number for printing
what is their trial error policy (usually printers say they may mess up on the first one or so, and they will not be held responsible for a couple mistakes to get things looking right)

Couldn't have said it better myself. Really, I didn't know enough to ask half those questions. I do have two more, though.
Are one size of pants going to be alright? Or, do you just mean same relative size?
Also, heavy, could you ask him about printing around the bottom cuff?
This is coming along nicely *rubs hands together in a sinister manner*

I noticed their normal shipping charges were more than the pants-- not sure how they figure shipping for multiple items.
I agree the best thing may be to get them in Thailand, but prices are generally negotiated there, and I have learned that KOTRers are not always reliable piking up their orders, for whatever reasons. So anyone doing this would have to consider that, though it's likely that someone who didn't pre-order would snag a pair. . . and we might transfer W10k in advance to the purchaser, any leftover returned or applied to printing costs/extra pairs for silk-screen mistakes, etc. . .fortunately, silk-screening on flat cotton is the easiest!
(if we could only find out who did the "on the rocks" pants available on Tonsai, we could add a "Korea" and tweak the logo. . . doubt there's any copyright worries there!)
B-- fisherman's pants tend to be one-size, and yes they will fit you.

Use of APO for shipping for anything other then personal use is illegal and should never be done for someone.
FYI Korea can confiscate anything they want too and add the tax to it if they think it is something you could buy in Korea and after 6 mths of living here as a service member they can do it to anything. It is rare but it dose happen. Example is a women that shipped a humidifier from the states and they confiscated it and put a 200$ tax or something like that on it. She could pay the tax, pay to send it back or abandon it. She chose to abandon it because it was cheeper to just get one here then pay to ship it back or pay the tax.
Ok Rant Over.
Just thought I would remind/tell people of this since it seems to come up in the posts alot lately.
PM me for more info on this...
You guys seem to be on a roll here with the plan to get said pants but I thought I would throw my two cents in here and maybe help you out and make things a whole lot easier.
My fiancee is in Thailand and knows a supplier of the fisherman pants for the night market in Chiang Mai. She can get the pants for a very reasonable price. I don't want to promise anything here but in the past she has gotten them for about 3000 won per pair. Of course with them not being sent by a company they can be sent marked as a gift as well as not getting a huge mark up on the shipping. There is also a chance that she will be coming to Korea soon which would eliminate shipping (again no promises).
She can get the thin ones I think but I have found that they don't really last very long and really don't stand up to climbing at all. The real jem though is the thick heavy cotton weave pants. They are MUCH tougher and though they are thicker, because they are a weave they are just as cool (And I mean that in the literal and not figurative sense though you could take that as both as well). She could order them in pretty much any colour and they usually come in a duo tone colour where the top is one colour and the bottom is a complementing colour.

This is pretty much the style that she can get. Printing I think would have to be done in Korea and someone else would have to take care of that (my Korean sucks still).
Let me know if you guys are interested.
cheers. Ryan.

wow! worth checking on for sure. . . are the thicker kind as good for printing/silk-screening?. . . anyway, thanks for the "hopeful" offer!!
I don't think that the thick ones would be quite as good for silk screening but I know nothing about the process so really I can't say. Its more of a thick weave fabric than a standard fabric that does not really have a visible weave. I would imagine that inks would take to it but I would guess they would still take to the thinner ones better. (I should be able to get either). I have however found that the thin ones really don't stand up to the wear and tear of climbing that well, they are very cheaply made and I would not expect them to last very long. The thick ones however are wonderful and I have had pairs that have lasted much longer than a year.
Perhaps a small sew on patch would be a good option???
The offer is still on the table just let me know thoughts.

I also think the thicker ones are a better option. They are still comfy and breathable but hold up really well.

Awesome. The thick pants sound perfect, they don't look bad either. Rather than try to print on them, it might be easier to get scraps of fabric printed, then have them sewn on by a local seamstress or seamster. Hell, we could even do a kind of DIY thing... get the pants, modify them to your liking.
If it's just strips of cloth we're working with, I could even try silk screening them myself... it could be fun, and the materials probably aren't that hard to come by.

I think printing would still work fine on the thicker ones. Kris has a pair of thick ones with printing (everyone who's been to Railay I'm sure has seen them) and they have held up very well. The printing is good and hasn't worn or faded at all in a year and a half of heavy use (and a couple times in the dryer).

Yeah, so is this still being looked into and what not?
I can't help out with the planning stages as I'm completely ignorant of the how-to for all of it, but I will pledge some cash for a pair of pants or two.
