Has anyone been to Jeonju University's climbing wall?
I'm wondering if they let non-school people also climb there, what their hours are, if there are any fees, and if you have to bring your own shoes and harness or if they have stuff there you can borrow. A friend and I are interested in checking it out.

Thanks!

Hi,

Try asking 'skinsk'. She should know that info.

Take care,

Eric

Well, I worked there, so I climbed there. I've also gone with other KOTRers. I'll be back in town soon, and would be happy to go and introduce you. It was built for the JJU Alpine club, who train there in the afternoon. As long as you are polite and respectful, it shouldn't be a problem. No rental gear, so to speak. (The alpine club has their own, and I've always brought my own, though I have gotten a belay on theirs). No fees, and whenever I met the JJUAC there (including 2 of my students!) they have been very friendly. There are no set hours per se, but if there is a class there (not that there are any I know of) then it might not be appropriate. Except in afternoon/evening (4:00- ) I have always had the place to myself.

Hi, I'm new to korea, i really want to get climbing, is it possible to climb this wall at weekends? I work in a hogwan and will find it hard to get down during the week as I live in Iksan.

I have all my own gear except a rope is it possible to borrow a rope? and is it all lead or can you top rope from the wall?

If you could let me know the details that would be awesome. Thanks

Will

Hi . . I am back at Jeonju U! The wall was built for the JJU Alpine Club. I've been allowed to go there and I've also brought guests. The guy who runs it is friendly, but he doesn't really speak English. If anyone is climbing there, they'll probably be students who speak some. You can ask if it's OK that you climb there. I doubt they'd turn you down. The public wall in Jeonju, also on this site, or the gym, are other options. Gunsan has a gym and a wall as well (but the gym isn't listed on this site. . . I can try to help you with that when I have a little time), and like Jeonju, is accessible from Iksan via train or bus. I think it's closer, I am off Thurs PM until Mon at 4, so I'm rarely in Jeonju for the weekend. You should try to make it to a posted trip on the weekend. You'll meet lots of people and get out of Iksan! You might want to contact vraddict--he's been gone awhile, but lived in Iksan when he was in Korea and might help. I tend to have evenings off-- but Tues and Thurs I have 11 starts, so if you could come in the AM, we could see about using the Uni wall, and as I'd have to clean up by 10:30, you would make it back to Iksan in an hour and a half at most. That'll have to wait for the weather, though! I wouldn't mind an AM workout, though Tues would probably be best for me, as I think I have a Wed date with Anuschka, but that might be able to change to Tues. I don't think either wall has gear for rent, but if there are others, you'd likely be offered a belay and/or top-rope if you prefer. Someone does have to put the rope up:-) You should have personal gear, though, and you might want to observe some belayers before you get your stuff out.
