i posted something like this before but now i've been offered jobs in these places and want to know which would be the best for a climber.
wonju
daejeon
pyeongchon
seosan
any gyms in these areas? any climbers? please let me know!! cheers, and see you on the rocks...
Congrats on the jobs offers!
first of all, i would nix seosan. its fairly flat around there and far from any climbing. just ask oread (http://www.koreaontherocks.com/pm.php?id=89). she lives near there.
i dont know where pyeongchon is. can you tell me what cities that is near?
daejeon & wonju, tough call.
it really depends on the type of climbing you like the best.
if you like trad go to wonju. from there you will be pretty close to seoul (insubong and other climbs in bukhansan) and pretty close to seoraksan. there is a lot of trad and ridge climbing there. dont know if there is a gym there...
if you like sport come to daejeon. there are some sport routes at gyeryong san (mountain) which borders the west side of daejeon. plus from here its only 2 hours to ganhyeon(sport climbing near wonju), seonunsan(some of the best sport climbing in korea), daegu(which has some sport climbs in the area), and a handful of other little places. also, if you have an itch for trad, it takes about 3.5 hours from daejeon to the base of insubong. there is one gym. its cool. only boldering but large enough to get a good work out. and rumor has it they are building a large outdoor wall near city hall and it should be finished in april/may.
personally, i dont enjoy trad climbing in korea and would feel a bit far from good sport climbing if i were living up north (seoul, wonju, etc...)
finally, my climbing buddies are going on expedition this spring so i need some Daejeon climbing partners ;) come to daejeon and i can take you to the gym and the local crags!
BTW, what school are you looking at in wonju and daejeon?

elp in wonju
yang g-els in daejeon
the seosan pays the best and no fridays -- still no you think?
send oread (http://www.koreaontherocks.com/profile.php?uid=89) a PM if you can. she lives in Hongseong??? and that is near seosan. fridays off is nice but what does it matter if there's nothing to do? i've been to seosan once. pretty small "country" town.
i haven't heard of the other schools. whats the schedule like in daejeon?
and where is pyeongchon?

pyeongchon is on the subway line south of seoul. it's near anyang so i figured i could go to the gym there. i think there's a gym there anyway.
i think it comes down to this: sport or trad.

thanks a bunch eric, and if i do end up in daejeon, i will hold you to your offer, i.e., we're going climbing.
oh, and the seosan just gave the offer away so that's one down...
have you heard of polyschool in daejeon? they're hiring too

oh, and pyeongchon's out too.
this is how it's been going. so hard to decide, and then the decision is made for me. it's not all my fault -- they all want instant answers. not good for someone so indecisive :(

i havent heard of the poly school but thats not unusual. there are so many institutes. the name kind of rings a bell though...
i dont know of anyone in the wonju area to give you beta. maybe you could contact some of the current teachers in wonju to see if they know anything.
good luck and let me know when you know
