Hey all
I was in a local climbing shop yesterday just chattin with the bloke behind the counter and we got to talking about Korea and the climbing there etc.. In the course of our conversation he told me that 5.10, madrock and Trango all have their head manufacturing plants in Korea.
So I got to thinking some people here might know where they are and if there's any wholesale/factory outlets for these companies (and others that might manufacture in Korea as well).
just a thought
Colin
not sure where headquarter are or outlet places, but trango stuff is dirt cheap here. i love their shoes but not a big fan of their trad gear. i would use their harnesses, biners and small things like that, though.

where do you go to buy the trango climbing stuff? do you know of any gear stores in seoul? and eric i know you probably know of gear stores in daejeon. and exactly how cheap is cheap?
thanks!
yeah, i shop in daejeon. i buy shoes for about 35,000 Won. you can also pick up trango harnesses for about 50,000. Biners and other hardware are cheaper than imported stuff but most hardware in Korea is pricey.

oread: mate I was out in Dongdaemum yesterday and found a couple of gear shops, just sports stores really but they had some climbing gear, prices were nothing special though (not as cheap as everything else seems to be in this country :-).
Eric: are the shoes you're talking about from all manufactureers of just local stuff ? I am going tobe through Daejeon tomorrow afternoon/night to pick up some skis, where should I go to have a look at gear ??
Love Korea, this place is awesome.

if you need directions before, let me know and i can help.

hey Mr.answers,
I'm finally buying my rope. I would like to look for the same model as the one you have(BEAL). Should I start by looking at the shops you mentioned in Daejon? Or is there different place to go as far as ropes are concerned?
Hopefully be climbing in a few weeks....can't wait!
Thank you.
Jen, Cheonan city
hey jen
i have never looked for ropes in korea. well, i take that back, i have looked but was turned off by the price. i just waited til i got home (US). every rope i have seen in korea has been 220,000 plus!
if you can, order a rope at home, have it shipped to your folks/friends house and have them mail it. it will be cheaper that way i think.
but the next time i get to the climbing stores in daejeon i will check the price for you.

The Trango factory is in Incheon, however you have to be a dealer to buy anything. Thats why their stuff is so cheap, no import taxes. Trango has a distributor in the US, I think in Colorado, and its great stuff, in fact my whole rack including harness and shoes are Trango. Petzal, Wild Country and the like pricey. I did buy 2 Petzal ascenders a while back for about w70,000. I could live with that. If anyone knows of a shop with the best prices's on rope please let me know.

I can get you cams here for 33,000 a piece and brassies (trango) for 45,000 a set of 8. All 5.10 are being sold off for 40,000 due to copyright issues, and the name is changing to Anazasi in Korea. Dong Dae Mun had tons of shoes so i bought 10 pair. They might not last long.

33,000 ya say, was through Jogno?dongdaemun gear shops (yeah finally found them .. wasn't all that hard really :-) and almost everyone seemed to have a blanket 43,000 price on (Trango) cams (not bad where I am from) 33,000 sounds nice though.
My next saving project is going to be a new pair of shoes so if you end up with any left over lemme know.
Colin
P.S. thursday at Ganhyun is a goer :-)
you can also use www.trango.co.kr to check on prices. It's all in Korean... don't be lazy, it isn't very hard!! You can usually find pretty good deals, or at least a price to compare against your local shop.

Judging by the fact they have an online purchase facility and nowhere (that I found) does it say you have to be a dealer to buy off their site I rekon the trango website is a pretty good way to go (for some gear anyway).
Anyone played with the excalibur cams ?? they've got the 1-10set going for 450000won ... super cheap for 10 cams in my book (if they are decent ... hell even if all they do is hold together :-).
And just to prove how easy Korean is I am gonna go do my homework .... might even get it right too :-)

I have a friend with a shop who can get them cheaper then that, I bought 25 cams for 900,000. Ropes are about 210,000 for the edelweiss sharp rope. If you want to buy something send me a message and I can call him and get a price, n harm if it can be cheaper.
