Daejeon has a goodly number of gear stores for the outdoors types, and a few actually have real climbing gear!
Edelweiss/백두대간
Daejeon City, Jung-Gu, Dae-heung Dong 1-20
Tel: 042-253-1025
Fax: 042-257-8848
cell: 011-453-4184 (Manager Han Sangwon/ 부장 "한상원")
To be found at the top-end of "Pet Street" near the bridge/ Daejeon River and Soju tents, a mere 5 mins walk from the central downtown "Culture Street" and Dong Bang Mart areas. Carries a good (for Daejeon) range of real climbing brand clothes and equipment - shoes, quickdraws, helmets, chalk, tape, cams, biners (crabs), sleeping bags, pads, cooking gear, etc etc. The manager Han Sangwon is a climber too and always ready to discount for friendly people. If he doesn't have your size, colour whatever he will order it in. Store is small outside, but has 2 levels and is right next to a Makolli/ Dong-Dong Ju restaurant whose owner (an ex-ROK Marine) is also very much a friendly outdoors enthusiast.

Daejeon City, Seo-Gu Yong-mun Dong
A big new store right on the main road and subway line (Yong-Mun Dong Yeok) between downtown and the fashionable Dunsan Dong area. The store carries a lot of gear and clothing. Prana, Black Diamond, Grivel, Trango, Lowe Alpine etc They have a decent amount of draws, slings, ropes, cams etc as well as tents, camping gear and so on. The manager is pretty friendly and helpful too and it's easy to find (but parking can be hard).
Echoroba
Daejeon City, Downtown Eunheung Dong and Yuseong Gu (2 shops).
Jung Gu Eun-haeng Dong (Opposite Galleria Department Store)

Yuseong Gu Jang-dae Dong 331-4

Fax: 042-825-5160
E-mail: jih221@hanmail.net
cell: 011-436-5882 (Manager Jeong Ik-hee runs both branches with his wife)
OK so not so much climbing gear in these shops, but great range of clothing, tentage, trekking poles, gloves, backpacks and so on. Jeong Ik-hee is a climber and has been on a few expeditions himself I believe, so he knows the difference between the needs of a climber and a hiker for gear selection. His family is super nice and even attended our wedding with others in the Daejeon Korean climbing world. Usually has a rack or 3 of heavily discounted stuff (50-70% off), and personally I have been super super happy with all the echoroba products I have bought (shells, tents, fleeces, gloves, tees, hats etc). Service is always great.
Climbers Villa/ 클라이머산장
Daejeon City Seo Gu, Nae Dong

cell: 011-451-6669
A 10 minute walk from the Daejeon Climbing Centre (Gym). Stocks the best range of climbing hardwear in Daejeon. Ice screws, pitons, cams, nuts, slings, axes, shoes and ropes. Also has a fair range of clothing and sleeping bags, backpacks etc. The owner/ manager Hong Hyeon is a very capable and experienced climber. Usually has a bargain rack too and has a small distinctive climbing wall outside his shop. Prices aren't super cheap, but you can usually get a discount by smiling and so on.

Oh, I forgot that there is also a number of K2, BlackYak and other out-door stores. The 2nd and 3rd pictures above show me in the Downtown (Eun-haeng Dong) Black Yak shop with the climbin' owner. They DO have fair range of climbing hardwear and useful gear. Hexes to hats, chalk to candles, draws to diapers (well no, no diapers). To find the Black Yak downtown is easy. It's on the main road 2 blocks down from the Train Station (on the right if your back is to the Station). Friendly service, good prices and 2 stories of goodies to drool over!

The manager at Edelweiss, Mr Han Sang-won not only offers regular big discounts but also can do resoles on your shoes at a reasonable price. The restaurant next door (trad looking place) is also worth checking out, as the owner is an avid outdoorsman (with moustache) himself! It's also the only licenced Suunto dealer in Daejeon (though others re-sell via 3rd parties). To find it, go left at the downtown starbucks shop along the pedestrian street to the end, swing left and walk up about 50m, and it's there on the corner just before the bridge/ river with soju tents galore.

The downtown Blackyak store that was on the main drag down from the Train Station in Eunhaeng dong (은행동) has relocated. It is now out aways in Gao dong (가오동) in the Tomato Building Shopping Centre, 1st floor along with a lot of other small "outdoors/ sports shops".

Nepa (the brand of climbing fashion this year in Korea) has opened a swag of stores in Daejeon including one right at the intersection of the main drag (jungang-ro/ 중앙로) and oriental clinic street (hanyakjae geori/ 한약재 거리) in Eunhaeng dong...right near the World Food Mart and a tad closer to the train station than the now gone Blackyak shop.
