Mir Climbing Center is the only well populated climbing center in Suncheon and Gwangyang. There is always a decent crowd at the climbing center on weekday evenings and Saturdays. As most climbing gyms in Korea, this gym does not focus on bouldering and does not have any climbs that require a climbing rope. However, it is a very good gym to meet friendly climbers and endurance training. They also have special classes for those who are new to climbing and want help improving their climbing.
This gym has been opened since July 2014.

Old, small, friendly gym in the basement below a small climbing shop. There's a foreigner there, and if you're in the region, this is probably the place to be. Akdong has been around since 1991? and is the creative force behind the bulk of the climbs at Yongseo Falls.... [Read More]

Sea cliffs along Mosageum Beach in Yeosu. . . developed by the local Yeosu club, it's not so much a destination, but if you're in the area. . . The rock is right on the west end of the beach, north of Manseongri Beach. 6 routes, and a few unbolted cracks. . . 5 routes are clusteresd together facing the sea; one around the corner right looked pretty gross, as people turned the start into the local "bathroom".... Slate?-like sedementary rock of mixed quality (friable to quite decent!) vertical to overhanging corners, roofs. . .with some vertical cracks. 5-15 meters on the beach; 50m for Haneul Dari, one of the 8 sights of Gwanmaedo: a 50 meter rock with a slice through the middle (so two rocks) over the sea. There's a bridge over it! You'd need to take a boat to that side of the island (would be very easy to arrange in the off-season)-- maybe some trails but a hefty hike. The main climbs are on the North end of Gwanmae beach. A few vertical cracks that ... [Read More]

The cliff band that overlooks Yeosu on Mt. Horang 호랑산 has two main crags. The first (and leftmost) is mostly overhanging with big roofs. A few cracks, dihedrals. . . and did I mention the roof? Further right is a more moderate face, slightly slabby, with a prominent (bolted) offwidth-to-chimney crack, a couple of lie-back cracks, but mostly crimpy and sidepull-ie face climbing. The harder routes are longer-- up to 33m? 13 bolts? where the easier crag is under 10 meters with a maximum 4 bolts. Some not-so-helpful topos and h... [Read More]

Ironpalms Wall

More Yudalsan "pebbles", with more variations than Kokkiri Bawi. From 8-16 meters-- slabs, overhangs, crazy corners and pebbly slabs will keep you on your toes.
South facing, the sun hits early and leaves late, with some gorgeous sunsets over the sea.
Ironpalms J (정현진) is the driving force behind this wall, a real gem that with Kokkiri Bawi makes Mokpo a destination for climbing. There's easy access and something for everyone.
This is a great winter crag-- soaking up the sun in the temperate south. In summer, th... [Read More]

Faces, cracks, chimneys, roofs, overhangs, slabs all bolted and most easily accessible to toprope. (Some would be quite sporty leads). Height ranges from 6-20 meters. All of the climbs are bolted, with a few fixed pins in between. Some of the bolts are well-spaced and there is potential for decking, but most of the climbs that could be plugged with gear are less run out, and you'd likely feel you hauled extra gear for nothing. 50+ routes on several large rock outcroppings, with some bouldering potential in the area. Rock was pretty solid. Ancho... [Read More]

Sedimentary conglomerate, slab to vertical, with some overhanging starts toward the left. One thin crack (11 c) on an otherwise pebbly face with small often not-super positive holds. Most of the routes have 1-2-3 finger pockets here and there. There's one good edge (10a) and a few nice heucos (one you can sit in!), one huge niche with a route that climbs out the side of it (11c) and several 10s and 11s with overhanging sequency starts. Good face climbing pretty unique for Korea that will test your balance, creativity and footwork without leavin... [Read More]
