우리암 Our Rock
Submitted on May 22nd, 2006 by skinsk Type: Rock Climbs    Province: Gangwon-Do    City: Wonju
photo Our Rock is a short and rather isolated rock 50m or so from the road on the outskirts of Wonju. Apparently it's visible from the street only in winter, when the foliage is thin. Vertical face climbing with a corner. Mostly crimpy stuff. Beware, there is a behive! If you are allergic to bees, you might want to avoid this place.

16 routes from 7-11 meters high (the majority being 7). 2-5 bolts per route. Pro looks old/rarely used.... [Read More]

Bolt Rock Climbing Center
Submitted on December 21st, 2007 by climbhigher14k Type: Gyms    Province: Gangwon-Do    City: Wonju
photo This is a brand new bouldering gym, built by Jin Tec Jeon and the Bolt Rock climbing club. It is fairly small, but the people are very friendly and as of Dec. 2007 all of the holds are brand-new!!! There are a few of the traditional 20+ move routes, but there are also many boulder problems as well.

Jin Tec speaks English, climbs hard, and is a great teacher.

Membership is 30 dollars per month.

Hours for the gym are not set in stone. Call the gym to see if anyone will be around when you want to go!... [Read More]

photo The limestone at this crag varies from exceptionally nice to merely climbable. Lots of small huecos and finger pockets. If you've been to Sununsan, then you'd find the routes here similar (except not as long and generally not as steep). There are a good few multipitch climbs here and enough grade variations to hold an interest for everyone. Although I've encountered quite a few spinning bolts at this place, the Koreans who climb here seem to have no trouble taking whips on them with no ill effect.... [Read More]

GuRyongsa (구룡사)
Submitted on June 2nd, 2009 by sussexupbeat Type: Bouldering    Province: Gangwon-Do    City: Wonju
photo Seems to be granite and conglomerate that dominate this river bed. Most boulders are either in the river or on it's shore. Some of the rocks have water under them [in the spring] (perhaps they'd be climable in the fall?), and nearly all of them are covered in lots of moss. there are cool traverses, atleast one steep overhang with the possibility of really difficult routes, lowballs and highballs, and a number of cool problems, although most of them have never been touched, and are well vegetated.... Ipseokdae
Submitted on May 22nd, 2006 by skinsk Type: Rock Climbs    Province: Gangwon-Do    City: Wonju
photo The prominent rock you'll see if you visit Ipseoksa (temple) is just the "tip of the iceberg", so to speak. Strolling along the boardwalk around the rock, you'll see some old pitons and evidence of early (aid?) ascents. The climbing is actually below this. Walk just beyond the turnoff to the rock and head down (if you continue straight instead of down when the path turns to dirt, you'll get to an ancient stone=carved Buddha relief). There are a handful (5?) bolted routes (10d, 11b, 12a, 10b, 10c) and some cracks (some with wooden wedges jammed ... [Read More]

MANDO
Submitted on June 28th, 2007 by sussexupbeat Type: Gyms    Province: Gangwon-Do    City: Wonju

Got Photos?

Add photos of MANDO
this is a small basement gym in the MANDO dormatory, in the city of MUNMAK. it is about 3.5 meters high, maybe 13 meters long, and 5 meters wide (those are all guesses). from vertical to overhung.
it is a non-profit gym (which means you probably won't have to pay, but it is tricky to get in, at first). if you want to go, you should contact someone who may perhaps know one of the climbers there. another option is just going there and talking to the security guard (or perhaps running into a climber). None of them speak English (some a tiny ... [Read More]

Sang Bawi
Submitted on March 23rd, 2008 by climbhigher14k Type: Rock Climbs    Province: Gangwon-Do    City: Wonju

Add photos of Sang Bawi
Sang Bawi is a slabby dome which offers around 6 routes of up to 3 pitches in length. The bolts on the more difficult pitches are in good shape, but some of the others have extremely corroded hangers. There is at least one crack, but is covered in lichen, much like the rest of the dome.

An interesting place to check out if you like slab and are in the area.... [Read More]

Wonju Artificial Climbing Wall

Wonju Pandae Artifical Ice Park
Submitted on January 25th, 2010 by jason in Sokcho Type: Ice Climbs    Province: Gyeonggi-Do    City: Wonju
photo Pandae is similar in construct to Yong Dong Ice Park, although smaller in total climbing area. Pandae has four areas all situated across a rock face. From the left the first area has ice up to 25M and has a large number of natural anchor points (some with slings and rings attached to natural features already) across the top. There is no access up the back so all routes for Pandae must first be led before top roping is possible. Ensure you bring a strong climber who can lead and place a TR. About 7 ropes are possible on the far left area. 60M ro... [Read More]
