photo Faces! (80-120 degrees) routes with a lot of (mostly bolted and/or pitoned) cracks, aretes, corners, small roofs. . . in the northern tip of Mudeungsan, the park just east of Gwangju.

There are 32 routes, but the easiest are 5.10a. The routes are stout-- nothing really for beginners. 7-34 meters in length; one pitch. Pro varies from newish to pretty old rusting pitons. . . my partner pulled an anchor apart (we didn't weight it, thankfully, but the 3 thin wires had frayed all the way through) but we didn't remove it from the one bolt boulder... photo Seoninbong is very similar in style and variety to its neighboring peak Insubong. Seoninbong has over thirty-one routes, and is primarily slab and crack with an assortment of face, chimney, face and overhang climbing. The average route is four to six pitches in length. The longest, Yodel Buttress, is eight pitches. The hardest, Gangjeok Crack(5.12c) is two pitches. Seoninbong is considered the harder of the two for obvious reasons--IT IS.... [Read More]

photo This is a fairly new area about 20 minutes south of Chungju. All of the climbing here seems to be slab. The anchors looked new but typically Korean. The bolts looked pretty good.

It is a small area and hosts about 15 routes, some are 2 pitches.

Don't come if you don't like slab, and don't come too far. If you live in the vicinity, come check it out.... [Read More]

photo A 10a and 10b face and a bolted 10? crack (offwidth to almost chimney!). 15m, 7 bolts (plus anchors) max. Sometimes harsh (granite?) and some decent runout make the crack a very sporty crack and a bold lead for it's grade. Pretty vertical.
Max bolts, 6; typical triangle with rope/wire running through one good and one somewhat corroded bolts. A rope to assist a very steep, dodgy looking "walk off" to the right (we lowered, left a clippable rap ring).... [Read More]

photo Slab, vertical, bulges and roofs, and big comfy ledges, too. 5-15m climbs (though I'm a poor judge and I didn't make a point to take note)
Nine routes (one has two endings) from 5.9-12a. The 5.9 cracks have a few obnoxious pieces of foliage, but make up for it with some nifty laybacks;these cracks are bolted, and really too shallow for gear. The 10's on the left are super crinpy dime-edges, but they work! If you have small fingers or want to practise your footwork, I haven't seen anything like this in the 20 or so climbing areas I've visited i... [Read More]

photo This drive-up sport area boasts approximately 40 sport routes, ranging from 5.9 to 5.12a. There are a few nice roof routes, and a plethora of both easy and hard face routes. Most of the routes have names and grades painted at the bottom. The roof climbs range from 10 to 15 meters, while some of the longer routes are a little over 20 meters. The bolts look very good and the rock quality, for the most part, is excellent.... [Read More]

photo Mostly bolted slab to face (with a few overhanging sections on the long multipitches) climbs, 15-40+ meters per pitch. There are 10 routes on the rock, 4 of which are 2 pitches, one 4 pitch and one 5 pitch (these have trad pitches, requiring a set of friends). Well-bolted and frequently used by university clubs and climbing schools.... [Read More]

photo Limestone reminiscent of Halmaebawi and Sununsan, nearby or even Kan-hyon. Fifteen overhanging routes from 10b to 12 c/d, but they are mostly "manufactured". . . and pretty sharp.

The bolts are new and there are many (6-10) on each short route, with the usual steel clasped and fish-hook triangle anchors (some kinda twisty). Some artificial holds have been added to routes on the right. . . hmmmm. The rock is a little dirty, especially where you might smear your feet to start.... [Read More]
